How long does a fostering medical check appointment take?

There is no fixed length for a fostering medical check appointment, as it depends on your medical history, the information available and any checks the doctor needs to complete. Allow enough time to discuss your health questionnaire, answer questions and address any missing details with the medical professional.

A fostering medical check is normally completed during one planned consultation, but the time needed depends on the detail of your health history and whether the medical professional needs further clarification. A straightforward assessment may be relatively brief, while a more detailed discussion can take longer.

During the appointment, the doctor or other authorised medical professional will usually:

  • review the health information you have provided;
  • ask about current and previous illnesses, operations, injuries, medication and treatment;
  • discuss any ongoing physical or mental health conditions;
  • consider how your health may affect the practical responsibilities of fostering; and
  • carry out any relevant examination or checks required for the assessment.

The clinician may spend more time on areas that need context, such as a condition that is being treated, a previous period of poor health, regular medication or information that is not clear from the questionnaire. This does not necessarily indicate a problem with your application. The purpose is to form an accurate view of your health and whether you can safely meet the needs of a child or young person.

To help the appointment run efficiently, have your completed health questionnaire available and make sure you can describe your current treatment. It may also help to have details of medicines, specialist care, relevant operations and important dates to hand. If you are unsure about a part of your medical history, explain this rather than guessing.

The appointment length is separate from the time taken to complete the wider medical assessment. After speaking with you, the medical professional may need to review documents, seek clarification from your GP or request additional information. Those steps can happen after the consultation and may mean that the final medical opinion is not produced immediately.

If you have several health conditions, need communication or accessibility adjustments, or expect to need extra support during the consultation, mention this when the appointment is arranged. The relevant team can then explain what information is needed and how the assessment will be organised.

The length of a fostering medical check often reflects the complexity of the information being discussed, not whether you are likely to be approved. The medical professional is assessing how your health may affect the practical demands of fostering, rather than expecting you to have no health conditions.

Detailed questions about treatment, previous illness or day-to-day limitations help the clinician understand the context of your answers. Giving clear, honest information can make the discussion more useful and reduce the need to revisit points later. If an answer needs checking, ask the clinician to explain what further information is required and whether it affects the next stage of your assessment.
