Your fostering service may also use online training to check your participation and understanding. This can involve attendance records, completed activities, feedback from trainers and discussions with your assessing social worker. Completing an online module is only one part of demonstrating that fostering is suitable for you; the wider assessment considers your circumstances, understanding, motivation and ability to provide safe care.

Before an online course begins, check the practical requirements. You may need:

• a reliable internet connection and a suitable computer, tablet or smartphone;
• access to a camera and microphone for live sessions;
• a private space where confidential discussions cannot be overheard;
• time to complete activities without frequent interruptions; and
• the ability to download, read or submit course materials.

If you have limited digital access, a disability, a learning difference or another circumstance that could affect your participation, tell the fostering team before training starts. They can explain the available arrangements and whether alternative materials or additional support may be appropriate. If you are applying as a couple, ask whether both applicants should attend particular sessions and complete the same activities.

Online training can be a useful way to prepare, but it should not be treated as a substitute for asking questions about your own situation. Speak to your fostering team about the course structure, attendance expectations, assessment arrangements and any activities that must be completed in person.
