The time required for foster carer training depends on the provider’s programme, the number of topics included and how the sessions are scheduled. It is usually completed in stages rather than as one single course, with preparation before approval followed by further learning once you begin fostering.

Pre-approval training forms part of the assessment process. It introduces the responsibilities of fostering and helps you understand how to care for children who may have experienced neglect, abuse, loss or disruption. Sessions commonly cover areas such as safeguarding, child development, safer caring, managing behaviour, working with families and working with professionals.

The course may be delivered through several sessions grouped together or spread across a longer period. The timetable can depend on:
