Can a foster carer discount card be used with other promotions?

A foster carer discount card can be combined with another promotion only where the retailer’s terms allow it. The card does not automatically override restrictions attached to a sale, voucher, multibuy deal or promotional code. Each retailer decides whether its discount may be added to another offer and how the reductions are applied at checkout.

Retailer terms may distinguish between different types of promotion. For example, a card discount might be accepted alongside a general in-store sale but excluded when purchasing:

• items already reduced or marked as clearance;
• products included in a multibuy or bundle offer;
• goods covered by a voucher or promotional code;
• limited-edition, branded or otherwise excluded products;
• gift cards, delivery charges or service fees; or
• purchases subject to a minimum spend or other qualifying condition.

Some retailers also restrict the use of more than one discount code online, even if their in-store policy is different. An offer may therefore be combinable at a physical till but unavailable when ordering through the retailer’s website. The wording may also specify whether the discount applies to the original price or the reduced price, which affects the final amount payable.

Before relying on more than one promotion, check the full terms for the particular retailer and offer. Look for phrases such as “cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer” , “discount not valid on sale items” or “one promotional code per order” . Also check the expiry date, participating stores, eligible product categories and whether the offer can be used by the cardholder only.

If the terms are unclear, ask the retailer before completing the purchase. For an in-store transaction, staff can confirm whether the card can be accepted with the promotion. For an online order, try entering the promotional code and applying the card discount in the order required by the retailer’s instructions. If one discount removes another, the checkout should show which offer has been applied; do not assume that both will be honoured simply because the first code was accepted.

Keep a copy or screenshot of the relevant terms when an offer is important to your purchase. If the expected discount is missing, check the receipt or order summary before paying. A discount that was not permitted under the retailer’s conditions may not be added retrospectively, although the retailer may explain the available options.

Promotions can also change during their stated period, so a previous transaction is not proof that the same combination will be accepted later. The safest approach is to assess the card discount, the separate promotion and their specific exclusions together before placing the order.
