What happens to a foster carer discount card when fostering approval ends?

When fostering approval ends, the foster carer discount card may no longer be valid, but the exact outcome depends on the card provider’s terms. The provider may cancel the card, ask for it to be returned or leave it active until its stated expiry date. Do not assume that an unexpired card can still be used simply because it remains in your possession.

Check the reason approval has ended. Your circumstances may be different if you have:

• chosen to stop fostering;
• had your approval ended by your fostering service;
• transferred to a different fostering service;
• taken a break from fostering; or
• had your approval changed, suspended or reviewed.

Some schemes may treat these situations differently. If you are transferring agency or your status is temporarily changing, ask the card provider whether your eligibility continues and whether you need to update your details.

Contact the card provider directly. Use the contact details in the card account, membership confirmation or scheme terms. Ask them to confirm:

• the date on which your eligibility ends;
• whether the card will be cancelled automatically;
• whether you must return or destroy the physical card;
• whether the card can continue until its expiry date; and
• what happens to any linked digital card or account.

Keep written confirmation of the provider’s decision, particularly if the card is linked to an online account or if you have recurring purchases that use the discount.

Once the provider confirms that you are no longer eligible, stop presenting the card and remove it from digital wallets, retailer accounts and any browser or shopping app where it has been saved. Do not use the card for purchases made after the end of your eligibility unless the provider has expressly confirmed that this is permitted. A retailer may apply its own terms, but it cannot extend eligibility under the card scheme.

If you have already placed an order using the card, check the provider’s terms and the retailer’s policy. A discount may be reviewed if the purchase was made after eligibility ended, particularly where the scheme requires an active membership at the point of purchase. Keep receipts and ask the retailer or card provider how any adjustment should be dealt with rather than attempting to use the card again.

Ending approval does not necessarily mean that every record connected with your former fostering role should be deleted immediately. Retain relevant correspondence, receipts and confirmation of the card’s closure in line with your own record-keeping needs, but remove stored card details from shopping services and dispose of a physical card securely if the provider tells you it is no longer valid.
