There is no universal rule that completing therapeutic foster training online automatically results in a certificate. The provider decides whether to issue one, what it confirms and which requirements you must meet before it is awarded.
A certificate may record that you completed a particular online course or met its stated learning requirements. It does not usually mean that you are approved to foster, nor does it replace the wider assessment, checks, preparation and decision-making involved in becoming a foster carer. Keep this distinction in mind when comparing courses.
Before you enrol, check what the provider means by “completion”. Requirements may include working through every module, completing knowledge checks, taking part in discussions, submitting written reflections or meeting an assessment standard. If the course includes any live or practical elements, ask whether these also count towards certification and how attendance or participation is recorded.
It is also worth checking what the certificate will show. Depending on the provider, it may include:
- your name and the course title;
- the date of completion;
- the learning outcomes or level covered;
- the provider’s name and authorisation; and
- whether it confirms attendance, completion or successful assessment.
These details matter because an attendance certificate provides different evidence from a certificate confirming that you passed an assessment. If you are completing training as part of a fostering application, ask whether the fostering service wants the certificate itself, a completion record or another form of evidence. Keep copies of any certificate, assessment result, module record and feedback you receive.
A certificate can demonstrate that you have engaged with learning about therapeutic approaches, but the learning may still need to be discussed and applied during your fostering assessment and preparation. You may be asked to explain how the ideas relate to caring for a child, working with professionals and responding to behaviour in a safe, consistent way.

If more than one person in your household completes the course, check how certificates are assigned. An online learning platform may link the record to the individual account used for enrolment, so completing modules together does not necessarily create separate certificates for each learner.
Each person who needs evidence of their own training should ask whether they must register separately and complete the required activities under their own name. This is particularly relevant where both adults are involved in a fostering application, as the fostering service may need to understand each applicant’s preparation and learning.
