When are enhanced foster care payments made?
Enhanced foster care payments are made according to the fostering provider’s agreed payment schedule, once the placement and enhanced allowance arrangements have been confirmed. The exact timing can depend on when the placement begins, completed paperwork and the provider’s payment process, so your supervising social worker should explain the dates that apply to you.
Partnering with an
Ofsted Outstanding Provider
There is no single national date for enhanced foster care payments. The timing is set by the fostering provider’s written terms and payment cycle, with the enhanced element usually dependent on the placement meeting the agreed criteria and the necessary records being approved.
Before a placement begins, ask for the payment arrangements in writing. These should explain:
- the regular payment date or payment cycle;
- whether payments are made in advance or in arrears;
- when the first payment is expected;
- which part of the payment is the standard fostering allowance and which part is enhanced;
- what happens if a placement starts part-way through a payment period; and
- how changes to the placement or enhanced status affect later payments.
The first payment can involve more administration than later payments. The provider may need to check the placement agreement, confirm the child or young person’s needs, approve the enhanced arrangement and set up the foster carer’s payment details. Any required forms, approvals or bank information should be completed accurately, as missing information can hold up processing.
For an existing placement, the enhanced payment may be reviewed if the child’s circumstances change, if the placement ends, or if the agreed level of support is amended. The payment may then be adjusted in line with the provider’s rules. This means the amount received in one payment cycle should not automatically be assumed to continue unchanged in future cycles.
Keep a record of the placement start date, the agreed enhanced rate, payment dates and any written decisions about changes. If a payment does not appear when expected, check whether the provider has a cut-off date for that payment cycle and whether all approvals have been completed. Contact your supervising social worker or the provider’s finance team with the placement reference and relevant paperwork so they can identify the position.
Payment timing is separate from the wider support provided during an enhanced placement. Your supervising social worker should explain how financial arrangements fit alongside training, reviews, practical guidance and ongoing placement support. If the written schedule is unclear, ask for confirmation of the next payment date and what event triggers it.

The important date is often the effective date of the enhanced arrangement, rather than simply the provider’s usual payment day. Check whether the enhanced rate starts from the placement date, the date approval is recorded, or another date set out in the written agreement. Do not assume that an enhanced rate applies before the provider has confirmed it.
If the approval date and placement start date differ, ask the provider to explain how that period will appear on your payment statement. A clear statement should make it possible to see which payment period has been covered and whether any adjustment relates to the enhanced element.
Discuss your enhanced foster care payment dates
If you are considering an enhanced foster placement, speak with our fostering team about how payment dates and approval stages are set out in the written agreement. They can help you identify the questions to ask before proceeding.
