Are fostering payments made weekly or monthly?

Fostering payments may be made weekly or monthly, depending on the fostering service’s payment schedule and the terms agreed with you. Your fostering agreement should explain when payments are due, how they are calculated and what records you will receive.

There is no single payment timetable for all foster carers. The date money reaches your account is determined by the fostering service’s agreed payment cycle, the placement’s start and end dates, and any adjustments recorded for that period. Some services operate a weekly cycle, while others use a monthly cycle.

A weekly arrangement usually means the payment is calculated for each week of the placement and paid according to the service’s weekly schedule. A monthly arrangement generally involves payment for the relevant month, although the exact calculation may still be linked to the number of days or weeks a child is in placement. The payment date is therefore not necessarily the same as the date on which a placement begins.

The first payment can require particular attention. If a child arrives part-way through a payment period, the amount may be calculated only for the eligible days or period covered. The same principle may apply when a placement ends, changes from one type of arrangement to another, or a child moves to a different placement. The relevant fostering service should explain how partial periods are handled before you begin fostering.

Fostering payments may contain different elements, such as money intended to help meet the child’s day-to-day costs and any agreed fee or reward for the carer’s role. These elements can be shown separately in payment information, and they may follow the same payment date while being calculated differently. Do not assume that every payment is a single flat amount or that the same amount applies to every placement.

Your fostering agreement and payment guidance should clarify:

  • whether payments are made weekly or monthly;
  • the payment date or payment day used by the service;
  • how the first and final payment are calculated;
  • how part-period placements, respite and changes in arrangements are treated;
  • which elements make up the total payment;
  • what deductions, adjustments or overpayment corrections might be applied; and
  • what statement or record you will receive for each payment.

It is sensible to compare the written payment schedule with your bank statement and retain the records supplied by the fostering service. If an amount arrives later than expected or does not match the accompanying record, raise it with the fostering team and provide the placement dates and payment details. The service can then confirm whether the difference relates to the payment cycle, a change in the placement or an administrative correction.

When researching fostering, ask the service to explain the payment timetable in practical terms rather than relying only on the words “weekly” or “monthly”. You should understand when the first payment is expected, how payments are affected by a placement starting or ending mid-cycle, and who to contact about a discrepancy. This gives you a clearer picture of how fostering income is administered before you make an application.

The terms “weekly” and “monthly” describe the payment cycle, but they do not always describe identical periods of care. A monthly cycle may follow calendar months rather than a fixed number of weeks, while a weekly cycle may use the fostering service’s own defined week. This means the covered dates are important when checking what a payment relates to.

When reviewing the payment guidance, check how the service defines its payment period and whether the statement shows the dates covered. This makes it easier to understand why amounts can differ between payment periods, particularly where a placement crosses from one period into the next.
