Online foster training is designed as an entry point for people who are exploring fostering, rather than as a course only for those who have already fostered or worked with children. You do not need previous fostering experience, a childcare qualification or a professional background in social care to begin learning about the role.

Experience from everyday life can still be useful. For example, you may have developed relevant skills through:

  • parenting or caring for relatives;
  • supporting children or young people in a school, sports club, faith group or community organisation;
  • working in education, health, social care, youth work or another people-focused role;
  • volunteering or helping families in your local community; or
  • managing challenging situations, building trust and communicating with people from different backgrounds.

These examples are not requirements. They simply provide opportunities to reflect on skills that may be relevant to fostering, such as patience, consistency, listening, setting appropriate boundaries and responding calmly when behaviour is difficult to understand.

The online modules help you build an informed understanding of what fostering involves. They can introduce subjects such as children’s experiences, safeguarding, relationships, behaviour and the role of the foster carer. You are not expected to know all the answers before you begin. The purpose of the learning is to help you consider the responsibilities involved and identify areas where you may need further development.

You may find it helpful to think about situations in which you have supported someone, resolved a disagreement, maintained a routine or adapted your communication. Your experience does not need to come from a formal job or certificate. What matters is being willing to examine how you respond to different situations and how your experiences may shape the support you offer a child.

Starting online training does not mean that you are expected to present yourself as an experienced foster carer. It is an opportunity to develop your understanding before deciding whether to take the next step. If you later apply, your wider circumstances, motivation, relationships, household and ability to provide safe, consistent care will be considered as part of the fostering assessment. Previous experience is only one possible source of insight, not a substitute for the full assessment process.

If you have limited experience with children, that does not automatically prevent you from exploring fostering. The training and discussions with a fostering adviser can help you understand which skills you already have, where you may need more preparation and what fostering could involve in practice.

Online foster training provides a shared starting point, whether your experience comes from parenting, childcare, another profession or no direct work with children. This matters because fostering has responsibilities that everyday experience may not cover, including working with professionals, following agreed care plans, recording important information and understanding how past experiences can affect a child’s behaviour.

Previous experience can offer useful context, but it does not replace the introductory learning. Equally, having no formal background with children does not leave you at a disadvantage when you begin. The training gives you an opportunity to compare your existing understanding with the expectations of fostering and identify the areas you need to explore further before making an application.
