Do I need previous childcare experience to foster in Coventry and Solihull?

Previous childcare experience is not normally a requirement for foster carers. The assessment focuses on whether you can understand and respond to children’s needs, work with professionals, manage everyday responsibilities and provide a safe, consistent home. Relevant skills can come from many parts of your life, not only from working with children.

Experience that may be relevant includes:

• bringing up your own children or supporting relatives with childcare
• working in education, health, social care, youth work or family support
• volunteering with children’s groups, sports clubs or community organisations
• supporting a child or adult with additional needs
• using communication, organisation, problem-solving or conflict-management skills in employment or daily life
• having experience of families, communities or circumstances that may help you understand a child’s background.

Having no direct childcare background does not prevent you from applying. You will need to show that you are willing to learn, reflect on your approach and put a child’s welfare first. The assessment will explore how you respond to difficult situations, establish boundaries, communicate with children and adults, and work as part of a professional network.

Your assessment will also consider your existing knowledge and any areas where you need further development. This can include understanding attachment, trauma, behaviour, safeguarding, identity, contact with birth families and the effects of disruption or loss. You are not expected to know everything before you begin. Training is provided to help you build the knowledge needed for fostering, and further learning may be identified as the assessment progresses.

Practical examples are useful when discussing your experience. You might describe how you supported someone through a change, dealt calmly with challenging behaviour, helped a young person build confidence, or maintained a routine during a stressful period. The important point is not the job title or setting; it is what you did, what you learned and how that experience could inform your care of a child.

The assessment will look at your whole household and circumstances as well as your individual experience. This may include your relationships, health, home environment, support network, availability and ability to work cooperatively with the fostering service and other professionals. References, background checks and discussions with people who know you will form part of the wider assessment, so childcare experience is only one part of the picture.
