Eligibility is based on your ability to meet a child’s needs, rather than on holding a childcare qualification or having worked in a childcare role. During the fostering assessment, the assessing social worker will consider your practical skills, relationships, health, home life, capacity to learn and ability to work with children, families and professionals.

Relevant experience can come from many parts of life. This may include:

  • bringing up your own children or supporting relatives with children;
  • working in education, health, social care, youth work or community services;
  • volunteering with children or young people;
  • caring for someone with additional needs;
  • supporting children through clubs, activities, mentoring or coaching; or
  • using transferable skills from employment, parenting or other responsibilities.

What matters is how you use your experience. You may be asked to explain how you would set appropriate boundaries, respond to challenging behaviour, listen to a child, encourage their development and keep them safe. The assessment also considers whether you understand that a fostered child may have experienced neglect, abuse, separation or several changes of home. You do not need to know all the answers at the outset, but you do need to show openness, reliability and a willingness to learn.

People without direct childcare experience can still prepare effectively. Initial training normally covers areas such as safeguarding, safer caring, child development, attachment, trauma, managing behaviour, recording information and working with birth families and other professionals. You can use this training to explore how fostering differs from ordinary parenting or babysitting, particularly because foster carers work as part of a wider professional network.

The assessment is also an opportunity to identify any gaps in your knowledge. You may discuss your previous responsibilities, your reasons for fostering, the ages and needs you could consider, and how fostering might affect everyone in your household. References and statutory checks help build a fuller picture of your suitability; a lack of childcare employment is not assessed in isolation.

After approval, learning continues through further training, supervision and guidance from the fostering team. The support available is intended to help you respond to the needs of the child placed with you and develop your practice over time. Any placement decision should take account of your experience, training, household circumstances and the child’s individual needs.

If you are considering fostering in Herefordshire but are unsure whether your background is relevant, discuss specific examples with the local team. They can explain how your experience would be considered, what preparation would be involved and whether additional development could help you move forward.

Previous childcare experience does not have to be paid or gained in a formal childcare role. During your fostering assessment, the focus is on what responsibilities you have taken on, how you handled them and what you learned, rather than the title of a job or placement.

When discussing your background, give clear examples of situations where you had to make decisions, communicate with others, follow guidance or take responsibility for someone’s welfare. If your experience was limited or some time ago, explain this openly. You are not expected to present yourself as a childcare expert; assessors need an accurate understanding of your existing strengths and the areas where you will need further preparation.
