Your fostering social worker will usually be allocated with your location in mind, but they may not live or work in the same town as you. The important consideration is whether they can provide consistent, appropriate support and attend the meetings and visits required during your fostering journey.
During the assessment, your assessing social worker will need to understand your household, relationships, daily routines, support network and ability to care for a child. This involves regular discussions and may include visits to your home. A worker does not need to be based immediately nearby to complete this work effectively, provided the arrangements are practical for everyone involved.
After approval, you may have a supervising social worker who supports you with fostering responsibilities. Their role can include helping you understand a child’s care plan, discussing any concerns, contributing to reviews, and identifying further training or support. The social worker’s location is one practical factor, but their knowledge, experience and ability to work with your household are also important.
Local support can be organised across a wider region rather than from a single town. Staff may travel to meet you, and some discussions or training activities may take place at an office or another agreed setting. The precise arrangements depend on the purpose of the meeting, the stage of your application and the needs of your household.
It is sensible to ask how social workers are allocated before applying. Useful questions include:
- How is a social worker matched with a prospective foster carer?
- How often will visits take place during the assessment?
- Where will meetings usually be held?
- Who will support me if my allocated worker is away or changes role?
- Will the same team remain involved after approval, or will responsibility move to a supervising social worker?
- How are travel arrangements handled when a worker and foster carer live in different areas?
Living outside the town where a provider has an office should not, by itself, prevent you from applying. What matters is whether the provider can offer a clear support arrangement that works around your location and meets the requirements of fostering. Before proceeding, ask for an explanation of how contact, home visits, supervision and local assistance would work for your particular address.
A social worker does not have to be based in your town to understand the practical factors affecting your fostering household. More important is whether they understand the local services and arrangements relevant to a child, such as education, health appointments, transport and contact with family members.
When discussing support with a fostering provider, ask how your worker will work with local professionals and help you access services in your area. This gives you a clearer picture of how regional support will operate in practice than simply checking the distance to the provider’s nearest office.
